Gel coat field guide

Signs your finish needs attention

Gel coat is the thin, colored layer that makes a fiberglass pool smooth and watertight. Catching these early keeps a small repair from becoming a refinish.

Spider & star cracks

Fine cracks that branch out from a point, often near steps, corners or where something heavy hit the shell.

Blisters

Raised bumps, from pea-sized to coin-sized, caused by water working its way behind the gel coat.

Chalking & fading

A dull, powdery surface or washed-out color, usually from sun exposure or water that ran out of balance.

Staining

Brown, green or blue marks from metals in the water, leaves or chemical damage that won't brush off.

Water testing

Balanced water protects the finish

Water that is too aggressive or too hard is one of the most common causes of gel coat damage. Every service visit includes a full test, and we adjust for fiberglass rather than plaster.

ReadingTypical targetWhy it matters
Free chlorine1–3 ppmSanitizes without bleaching the finish
pH7.4–7.6Low pH etches; high pH scales
Total alkalinity80–120 ppmHolds pH steady
Calcium hardness150–250 ppmToo high leaves scale on gel coat
Cyanuric acid30–50 ppmShields chlorine from the sun

General ranges. Salt pools and your pool manufacturer's guidelines may call for different targets.
